Last week was a strong reminder of the importance of supporting young people and opening up real opportunities within construction.
Thursday was spent at NHBC’s offices for Youthbuild UK’s Building Pathways event. Jamie Clancy Toomey, Buxton’s Social Value Manager, joined an excellent panel discussion focused on engaging young people not in education, employment or training.
With 987,000 young people aged 16 to 24 currently in that category, an increase of 100,000 in the past year, it is clear there is still a lot of work to be done. The conversation highlighted the need for long-term thinking and practical action to help close the growing skills gap.
On Friday the team was in Brighton at the Youth Employment Hub for a busy and well-attended event. Employers and training providers presented to a full room of young jobseekers, followed by a careers fair at the hub. It was great to see so much interest in construction and a steady queue at the Buxton Building Contractors Limited table.
A final mention goes to Buxton Bear for lending his outfit to Millie – she looked fully ready to begin her construction journey.
