Last week, we had the absolute pleasure of representing Buxton at Norbury Manor Primary School’s Careers Day – a fantastic event designed to inspire young minds and open doors to the world of work. Buxton’s Social Value Manager was thrilled to take part and help show pupils just how exciting and varied career paths can be.
The theme for the day was all about mystery and discovery. We were each asked to bring an item related to our job and challenge the children to guess what we do. Naturally, we brought along a very special guest – Buxton Bear! Not only did he steal the show, but he also became an instant hit with the children, helping to break the ice and spark curiosity about the construction industry and the many roles within it.
Throughout the workshops, the children were incredibly engaged. From the moment they started guessing job titles to asking thoughtful questions about what it’s like to work in construction, their enthusiasm was infectious. It was heartening to see such bright interest in how buildings are made, the people behind them, and the skills that bring everything together.

After the event, we received this heartwarming message from the school:
"Thank you so much for attending our Careers Day and making it such a memorable experience for our pupils. The feedback from both staff and children has been overwhelmingly positive, and it's clear that your workshops made a real impact. Our pupils were genuinely engaged and excited throughout the sessions, and I've heard so many enthusiastic conversations in the corridors since your visit."
They added:
"You have truly helped to widen our pupils' career knowledge and opened their eyes to possibilities they may never have considered before. This kind of real-world insight is invaluable in helping our young people begin to think about their futures and understand the diverse pathways available to them. The questions they asked and the connections they made during your workshops demonstrate just how much they gained from the experience."
At Buxton, we believe that social value starts with opportunities – and that includes empowering the next generation. Being part of this day was a small but meaningful way to spark ambition, challenge stereotypes, and show young people that they can aim high, no matter their background.
A huge thank you to Norbury Manor Primary and Croydon Commitment for the warm welcome and for organising such a well-run and impactful event. And of course, a big round of applause for Buxton Bear, who clearly has a second career in public speaking!
We look forward to taking part in more events like this and continuing our commitment to building brighter futures in every community we work in.
